Great idea for a thread. I've been doing rig shots for a little over a year now. My rig is suction cup based.
Materials used to build it (total cost ~$250):
1 x 10' EMT pole - 1" thick (local Home Depot will have this in the Electrical aisle) - $8
2 x Avenger F1000 suction cups - $112 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/6 ... _with.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/67896-REG/Avenger_F1000_F1000_Pump_Cup_with.html)
3 x Manfrotto Super Clamps - $75 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5 ... thout.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546371-REG/Manfrotto_035_035_Super_Clamp_without.html)
1 x Manfrotto Mounting Stud (to attach your ball head to the Super Clamp - $6 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5 ... Stud_.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546376-REG/Manfrotto_037_037_Reversible_Short_Stud_.html)
I used the Manfrotto ball head (488 RC2) that I already had. Its a bit on the heavy side so I'll probably replace it with at 494 Micro ball head in the future ($55 - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5 ... Stud_.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546376-REG/Manfrotto_037_037_Reversible_Short_Stud_.html)).

Sweet rig shots! And thats a good price for a strong looking rig. Only problem I've heard about from rigs is that the suction cups leave circles on the paint and sometimes hard to remove. Ever have any problems like that?

i have never left a ring before. well it will sometimes be there when i take the suction cup off but i use quick detailer to get it off and if there is still something there just clay bar the area. i have never messed up any paint before. and i have the same setup but the pole is different . i will get some picture tom in the sun so you can see. got the pole at home depot in the fence section. works wonders

I have never left circles/rings behind on a car that were not able to be removed with quick detailer. Before I place the rig on a client's car I tell them that there may be rings left behind that can be wiped off easily (I always have a microfiber and quick detailer with me).
I was so scared to put the rig on the Custom painted widebody sunrise orange G35 I posted. He also had a very expensive CF vented hood, thought I was gonna crack it....LOL.

LMAO! my pole is 12', they are emt poles like yours but two 6' combined with another pole in the middle. I had two cut at 6' each so it's easier to transport. Plus it also helps to have a UWA lens, 10-22mm at 10mm on a 1.6x crop though.

For sure. I shoot my rig shots with a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. I usually don't like to go wider than 13mm because it distorts the car.

^I really like that setup. What did you use for the "connector" in the middle of the two EMT poles? Did the EMT poles themselves have to be modified at all to work with the connector?
How stable is it, does it wobble very much?

connector pole is from home depot as well. look in the closet pole section. only modifications were cutting the emt pole at 6' and drill holes for fasteners.
There is minor wobble but it stays steady. I'm still in search of a connector pole that goes on the inside of the two poles rather than over it. I think it'll be more stable that way.

You just use a wireless remote shutter release. I need a new one, I had a wired one, but thats pretty pointless. haha

No one has asked this yet, but at what speed do you drive the car that will give the desired effect of the rolling shot at the same time safe for the camera?(ie it doesn't fall of the car or the pole moving elsewhere)

The speed of the car depends on your shutterspeed. If its a bright scene, you might not get to use a long shutter (even when ND filters are used) so you have to compensate by speeding up the car to achieve the desired blur. The stability of your rig also has to be taken into consideration... too slow of a shutter or the car moving too fast might make your subject blurry due to bouncing of the boom.
For me, I never have the car moving any faster than a brisk walking pace.

No fancy avenger cups, just suction cups used for automotive body panel work.
I know I'm a little late to the party, but...just to clarify, are you talking the cheap dent-puller suction pads? I only ask as they're £5 each and not £30 each like the Avenger pads. Cheap is one of my favourite words.
Excellent shots in here by the way. I've wanted to build my own rig for ages and never realised just how easy and relatively cheap it would be.

I haven't done many rig shots lately... I used to all the time. Here's one of my more recent ones and a "behind the scenes" shot of it on the car.

definitely an amazing effect especially on track-ready cars like that porsche. nice shot.
I use a
canon 50d
sigma 10-20
marumi nd8 filter
avenger suction cups
manfrotto super clamps
2 5ft sections, and 1 6 ft section of EMT pipe with 1.5 inch OD = 16ft boom
pretty standard stuff...I like having a long boom because I personally like having a lot of background in rig shots.
